    Abstract
    Denne rapporten beskriver noen generelle egenskaper hos hybride Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) fixed wing-farkoster. Vi har sett på farkoster med såkalt tailsitter-konfigurasjon. Vi viser eksempler på de mest vanlige variantene av tailsittere. Rapporten forteller også hvilke historiske forsøk det har vært på å utvikle fungerende tailsittere. Vi peker på både fordeler og ulemper ved tailsittere, sammenliknet med de noe mer vanlige horisontale VTOL-hybridene. For eksempel benytter tailsittere vanligvis samme framdriftsenhet i både VTOL-fase og fixed-wing-fase. Det kan være vanskelig å oppnå god virkningsgrad i begge fasene. Det er også tatt med eksempler som viser hvordan tailsittere påvirkes av vind i VTOL-fasen.
     
    This report describes some general characteristics of tailsitter vehicles as a subcategory of Vertical Take off and Landing (VTOL) - fixed wing (FW) UAVs. The most common variants of tailsitter vehicles are described, as well as examples of development projects in the past. Tailsitters have advantages as well as disadvantages compared to more conventional horizontal VTOL-hybrid vehicles. As an example, tailsitters usually employ the same propulsion system in VTOL flight as is used in fixed wing forward flight. It can therefore be challenging to achieve high energy efficiency in both flight modes. Some aspects of how tailsitters respond to wind in VTOL-mode are also included in the report.
