Borregaard Ind. Ltd, the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Telelab AS have tightly cooperated in order to analyze and evaluate the identification of Legionella spp. in air the dispersion of Legionella spp. in air the dispersion of Legionella spp. from the aeration ponds located at Borregaard’s biological treatment plant to ambient air Legionella spp. has previously been identified in the liquid suspension of the aeration ponds at Borregaard’s biological treatment plant. This report describes the overall results obtained from the joint project that was performed during the time period 11.09.2006 – 05.12.2006. The collaborating partners have independently published reports describing in detail their contribution to the project. The project owner is Borregaard Ind. Ltd and FFI has been the project coordinator. Successful identification of Legionella spp. in air was obtained at various locations close to the aeration ponds by the use of a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model for prediction of statistical averaged wind fields, suitable collectors for air sampling, and microbiological and molecular methods for bacterial analysis. Several Legionella spp., including L. pneumophila, were identified in air at the biological treatment plant. The identified L. pneumophila isolates were genotypically identical, but they were not classified into the serogroups 1-14. The results strongly indicate that Legionella spp. may be dispersed from the aeration ponds to ambient air close to the biological treatment plant, based on the finding that airborne Legionella spp. was identified up to 200 m from the aeration ponds. The highest concentration level of Legionella bacterial cells were identified directly above the aeration ponds. This level decreased as the distance from the aeration ponds increased. The Steering Committee has had the overall responsibility for the work and consisted of representatives from Borregaard Ind. Ltd., the municipality of Sarpsborg (health authorities), FFI, and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Dr. Viggo Waagen, Borregaard Ind. Ltd. is the Point of Contact (POC) for further information regarding this work.en_GB
