In a network based defence the military capacities will be connected by using information and communication technology. The idea is that information superiority can be achieved by maintaining a common situational awareness within the force, and that this will improve the combat power. Sufficient capacity and mobile structures are important for the concept, and satellite communications could play a role in this infrastructure. In this document satellite communications are described in general, including satellite operations. It also contains an update on civil satellite systems and operators, with some bakcround information about the companies and descriptions of their systems and services. Examples of military use of these commercial systems are mentioned. Finally, some considerations by using civil satellites for military purposes are given.en_GB
