Abstract
During the last few years there has been a general increase of interest in space weather. Very likely this is related to the
increasing understanding of the potential damage such processes can inflict on modern technological systems.
Consequently, the European Space Agency (ESA) has during the last two years conducted an investigation of how and
whether a common autonomous European space weather programme should be initiated. It is clear that the basis for this
is very good when looking at the scientific and technological expertise available. However, economical and political
considerations must also be taken into account in this respect. Hence, ESA commissioned a reference group (where the
institute has been represented) to assist in evaluating these questions. This report gives an overview of the work as well
as a few thoughts on the future possibilities in this area.
