    Abstract
Two nearly identical automatic weather stations have been constructed. They have been applied for establishing comprehensive meteorological databases, which have been used as foundations in modelling object and background signatures. The stations measure all relevant meteorological parameters: air temperature and humidity, long and short wave radiation (in and out), wind speeds and directions, precipitation (rain and snow), and finally underground temperatures. The sensors are connected to a data logger equipped with three multiplexers. Every 5 minutes over 50 meteorological parameters are logged, and once a day the logged data are transferred to FFI via telephone. The telephone connection makes it also possible to supervise and reprogramme the logger. The stations have been operating successfully over long periods of time, and they have proved to fulfil the purpose of delivering confident meteorological information.
