In project 775, models for simulation of thermal signature for natural backgrounds and for vehicles have been developed. Both models were calibrated and evaluated on the basis of meteorological data and real thermal images. For that reason two automatic measurement stations were developed and set up at Rygge and Bardufoss. The sites were chosen to ensure a large variety in meteorological conditions. The stations consist of two main parts: a meteorological recording system and a system for recording thermal images. Sampling frequencies are 5 and 15 minutes respectively. The background signature model is based on one-dimensional beat-flow equations. Applied on three different types of background elements, the RMS-deviations from measured temperatures appear to be less than 1.7 K for periods of several days. For vehicle simulations the software MuSES, which has been applied to a M1 13 APC, was chosen. The input in the model is a specially developed 3-D CAD drawing. The calculated temperatures show good agreement with surface temperatures measured on a real vehicle.en_GB
