Bruk av satellittkommunikasjon i Forsvarets taktiske kommunikasjonsnode
Abstract
8) ABSTRACT
This report deals with satellite communications for the Norwegian Defence Tactical Communications system. The
system has been based on radio links but larger distances between the communications nodes require the use of satellite
communications.
The main focus is on link budget calculations to investigate the capacity different ground terminals can support. Four
different climatic regions are used in the link calculations: dry inland at high and low altitudes, costal climate and
tropical climate. The frequency bands considered are X-band at 8 GHz at uplink and 7 GHz at downlink, Ku-band
(14/11 GHz), Ka-band (30/20 GHz) and EHF-band (44/20 GHz). The X-band seems to be the most advantageous due to
the least influence of atmospheric- and rain attenuation. The increased attenuation can at some extent be compensated
by increased antenna gain at increasing frequency but with reduced coverage area.
